Description
The Soundmaster was used for syncing sound to silent movies. It was placed adjacent to the projector and the drive for the reels came from the projector itself. It is driven from a flexible square-section wire direct to the flywheel on the back of the unit.
There is a circular bakelite recording and playback head and a permanent dual-pole magnet to erase the tape. The capstan and pinch roller are located below the head and come into play when a knob is rotated.
Scophony Baird were a locally based in Wells, Somerset. They had specialised in military sound technology during wartime. It is thought that the cine soundmaster may have been a domesticated version of the advancement of tape technology during World War II.
