In the days when smoking was permitted in cinemas ash trays like these could be found on the backs of the seats where they were joined. They would have to be emptied by the cleaners every day; an unpleasant task. Many fires were caused by cigarette ends as well as the unpleasantness if you sat near one if it wasn't stubbed right out. as in those days most people smoked it was accepted. Smoking ceased in most cinemas in the late 1980's.
